Priest Passes the Microphone to a Siberian Husky at an Oregon Animal Blessing

Priest Passes the Microphone to a Siberian Husky at an Oregon Animal Blessing

Monti couldn't help chiming in when the priest began singing at The Grotto's annual service.

Sebastian and Serina Gonzalez took their seats in the front row at The Grotto’s outdoor plaza in Portland, Oregon, hoping their Siberian husky would sit quietly through the annual pet blessing. Then the priest stepped up to the altar, began singing “Hallelujah,” and Monti heard his cue.

Instead of offering a polite whimper or resting under the bench, the dog threw his head back and joined right into the chorus. As first reported by The Dodo, the outdoor sanctuary was packed with local pet parents who had gathered for the beloved Blessing of the Animals ceremony. But while other pets settled into the quiet rhythm of the service, Monti decided the congregation needed a little vocal accompaniment.

An impromptu soloist at the altar

When Monti’s earnest howling began echoing across the basalt cliffside of The Grotto Plaza, the presiding priest didn’t shush the vocal pup. Instead, charmed by the dog's enthusiasm, he walked right over to the front pew and lowered the microphone directly in front of Monti’s snout.

Monti did not hesitate for a second. With the sound system amplifying his soulful vibrato across the sanctuary grounds, he poured his entire spirit into the hymn while Sebastian and Serina dissolved into laughter beside him.

“He’s always loved to sing along,” Sebastian shared on social media via @pnw.sebastian .

Laughter and applause across the sanctuary

Rather than feeling disrupted, the crowd of fellow animal lovers embraced the impromptu performance with wide smiles and chuckles. The sanctuary notes that the annual ceremony is organized to celebrate the deep bond between humans and their companions, making Monti’s spontaneous contribution feel right at home.

As the clip made the rounds online, dog owners celebrated Monti's holy performance:

"I'm sure Monti got some extra blessings that day."
"I love you, little dog singing in church!"
"Wonderful!"
"The cutest baby."

The vocal instincts of northern breeds

For anyone who shares a home with a Siberian husky, Monti’s operatic debut comes as no surprise. Bred as pack-oriented working dogs in northern climates, huskies rely heavily on vocal howling over simple barking to coordinate across distance and express solidarity. Sustained acoustic tones—whether an organ chord, an ambulance siren, or a priest’s harmonized singing—frequently trigger that instinctual reflex, turning everyday listening into a heartwarming group singalong.
