Neighborhood Backup Vocalist
Rio does not hesitate. The Shepherd mix sits in the hallway, ears already halfway into the briefing, then stands, turns toward the window, and answers the street like the truck specifically asked for him.
One ear up. One ear folding into soft-serve. Mouth open. Head tipped to the ceiling. Tail wagging like this is the best unpaid gig in the building.

Sirens Sound Like Pack Mail
The ASPCA notes that dogs howl to make contact and announce themselves, and that some dogs howl back at high-pitched sounds such as sirens. When the trigger stops, that reply usually stops too — less meltdown, more “message received.”
For Rio, the science lands loud and clear: the hallway is his booth, the siren is the cue, and the floppy ear is just stage presence.
Lucia still races the clock when she hears that first wail. Rio still shows up for backup. The neighbors… are adapting.
