When the package arrived, however, reality struck. The new medium would not even close around his chest. Following the manufacturer’s sizing instructions, she pulled out a measuring tape to check his actual dimensions — and discovered that this compact Jack Russell Terrier officially required an extra large.

The defensive pivot and the immediate cold shoulder

Holding him on her lap, his mom tried to break the news gently, even lifting his front legs slightly to explain where the fabric was pinching. Bruno’s reaction was immediate: he tilted his head, cut his eyes sideways, and looked away into the distance.
