Once Paralyzed by a Back Injury, 14-Year-Old Jack Russell Terrier Races Through Weekly Zoomies

He clearly never got the memo about slowing down.

“When Cody gets happy, he gets the zoomies,” Donald E. Kyne Jr. told USA TODAY.

Whenever Kyne gets back from running an errand, the 14-year-old Jack Russell Terrier can hardly keep his paws on the floor. His entire body joins in as he dashes through the room, leaning hard into sharp turns with unmistakable joy.

Two escapes into the woods before he became a shadow

Cody’s easy confidence took years of quiet patience to build. Earlier in life, an accident left the little terrier with a broken back and severe paralysis. Veterinarian Tim Cujdik took Cody into his clinic and looked after him through roughly two years of rehabilitation. When Kyne was living alone in Maryland, a mutual doctor friend introduced them, hoping the dog might bring steady companionship into his days.

The partnership had an anxious start. Within half an hour of walking through the front door, Cody slipped his collar and vanished into the summer brush. Cujdik helped search until late into the night, and Kyne finally spotted the pup early the next morning. The following Friday, Cody slipped out a second time while groceries were being carried inside. He stayed gone for two full nights before trotting back up to the house entirely on his own.

“After an adjustment period, Cody settled into the role of being my shadow,” Kyne said.

Greeting customers and sprinting between the aisles

Today, Cody spends his days as the official store ambassador at The Valley Naturalist in Timonium, Maryland. Between welcoming birdwatchers and neighborhood regulars, he unleashes his signature “Turbo Tuesday” sprints down the aisles. Kyne started sharing the moments on @valleynaturalist almost on a whim, initially doubting that anyone else would care to watch a senior dog race across the carpet.

“I almost didn’t post the reel, because I thought people wouldn’t like the silly moments Cody and I share,” Kyne explained.

The senior pup's boundless energy quickly struck a chord with dog lovers across social media, as iHeartDogs spotlighted:

"I love him!!!!"
"I've never seen a more effective advertisement in my entire life."
"Known sweet Cody for like a minute.. would die for him 🐾🥰"
"Tuesday Zoomday needs to be a trend 🙌🐾😍"

For an older dog who once could not move his hind legs, every sprint around the display racks is a quiet celebration of rescue and healing. Cody and Kyne have found an effortless rhythm together—one where age never gets to decide how much joy fits into an ordinary afternoon.
