Barack and Michelle Obama Mourn Portuguese Water Dog Sunny After 13 Years

Barack and Michelle Obama Mourn Portuguese Water Dog Sunny After 13 Years

The former First Family shared an emotional farewell to their spirited White House companion.

When Sunny first bounded onto the South Lawn in the summer of 2013, she didn't just walk the grounds — she cleared the White House hedges in full stride.

Watching her leap after squirrels and chase anything that moved, Barack and Michelle Obama quickly realized their new puppy had arrived with an unstoppable spark. The energetic Portuguese Water Dog joined the family at the beginning of their second presidential term, brought in to keep their older dog, Bo, company. From that first afternoon, she carved out her own unforgettable role in the executive residence.

Now, after 13 years of joyful sprints, state visits, and steadfast companionship, the former First Family has shared the heartbreaking news of her passing.

A force of nature on the South Lawn

In a moving tribute shared across social media, the Obamas remembered Sunny not just as a presidential pet, but as an affectionate dynamo who lived entirely on her own terms.

Athletic and full of boundless energy, she leapt over the hedges on the South Lawn like they weren’t even there, chasing squirrels, birds and anything else that moved.

While Bo was famously composed and easily persuaded by a crunchy treat, Sunny had an entirely different priority list. She ran on raw affection. She would throw herself onto the floor for belly rubs, greet White House staff with relentless enthusiasm, and affectionately pester Malia and Sasha even when they tried to sneak in an afternoon nap.

She also possessed a hilarious contradiction that canine lovers will recognize instantly: despite belonging to a water breed historically prized by fishermen for swimming through Atlantic waves, Sunny harbored a stubborn disdain for actually getting wet.

    Reunited with her big brother

Even as the family transitioned away from Washington, Sunny remained their steady shadow, carrying her trademark spark well into her senior years. The couple noted that she stayed "fiery and gorgeous till the very end of her days."

For the Obamas, her passing closes a meaningful chapter that began more than a decade ago. Bo passed away from cancer in May 2021, leaving a profound void that Sunny helped cushion with her steady presence.

As they navigate the quiet left behind, the family finds comfort imagining that the two White House siblings are back side-by-side.

"We will miss her terribly," Barack Obama wrote in his memorial tribute, "and imagine she’s with her big brother now, making sure he’s okay." It is a heartwarming farewell to a loyal friend who brought warmth, chaos, and unconditional love to one of the world’s most demanding homes.
