Golden Retriever Puppy Nuzzles into Mom’s Neck to Avoid the Big Stairs

Golden Retriever Puppy Nuzzles into Mom’s Neck to Avoid the Big Stairs

A hesitant Golden Retriever puppy decides that tackling the staircase can wait until tomorrow.

Alfie sat planted firmly on his owner’s lap at the top landing, eyeing the flight of stairs below with deep, unwavering suspicion.

His mom leaned forward, gently nudging his front paws toward the edge of the carpet. "Go down the stairs, bubba. Go on," she urged softly. But the young Golden Retriever had already made up his mind. Instead of taking a single step toward the descent, Alfie pulled himself closer, tucked his legs tightly against her chest, and buried his nose directly into her shoulder.

A polite refusal delivered in neck cuddles

Every time his owner attempted to coax him forward, Alfie doubled down on affection. He leaned his entire fluffy weight backward onto her knees, wrapping his paws around her arm and resting his chin under hers. Sensing his unease, she offered a tender kiss on his snout, admitting to him that she knew he was a bit scared. After one more gentle attempt to encourage him toward the drop, she gave up with a chuckle, looking toward the camera to concede, "You don’t want to."

Shared to Instagram by @alfiesworld.1, the clip captured a universal moment of puppy apprehension. As reported by DogTime, stair hesitation is a familiar developmental milestone for growing puppies, whose depth perception and coordination are still catching up with their rapidly stretching limbs. For Alfie, skipping the challenge in exchange for maternal cuddles felt like the best humor-filled compromise.

    More of Alfie at home

While staircase training remains a work in progress, Alfie has already mastered the art of cozy indoor lounging and outdoor curiosity:
