Honestly, fourteen couch blankets sounds reasonable.
After more than a year of pacing a noisy boarding kennel, the five-year-old rescue dog tucked his chin into a soft cushion and finally exhaled. Two women had welcomed him through their front door only days earlier, and Tommy was already acting like a pup who had found his kingdom.
Hearing the quiet rhythm of a peaceful household, his whole body relaxed. For the volunteers at STAB Rescue in Charlotte, North Carolina, watching the sweet mixed-breed pup unwind was the turning point they had spent months hoping to see. Tommy had arrived with a heartbreaking history—adopted and abandoned more than once, bearing the quiet weight of past mistreatment that left him deeply uneasy around men. In shelter boarding, the constant noise and unfamiliar faces kept his nervous system on high alert. But once settled in foster care with two women, his anxious guard melted away, revealing a gentle, devoted companion.
Seeing Tommy flourish under the care of his foster moms gave the rescue team an epiphany about his ideal future. Rather than writing a standard adoption profile, they decided to lean entirely into the dog's unapologetic comfort zone.
“After careful consideration, absolutely zero scientific research, and Tommy making his preferences everybody else’s problem, we have determined that this man needs LESBIANS,” STAB Rescue wrote on Facebook.
The rescue painted an affectionate picture of the pampered domestic life Tommy was yearning for, declaring him officially ready for his two-mom era.
“He’s looking for two moms who will call him ‘our son,’ buy him an unnecessary amount of enrichment toys, have at least 14 throw blankets on the couch and discuss his emotional needs over an oat milk latte,” the team added.
The candid listing quickly went viral, though not everyone took the lighthearted phrasing in stride. While thousands of animal lovers celebrated the shelter's transparency, a vocal handful of critics took personal offense at Tommy's preference for a home without men. STAB Rescue stood by their foster dog without skipping a beat, playfully dubbing the conversation “#TommyGate” while reminding followers that meeting an animal's emotional needs is always the primary goal of rescue work.
“For the most part, people think the posts are funny and they seem to resonate with it, but of course, there are always people that are going to have a problem with posts like that,” Alexis Ketover, assistant director of STAB Rescue, explained to The Dodo.
The rescue even followed up with a humorous plea to keep the focus where it belonged—on supporting vulnerable animals: “Please do not let one tiny four-legged misandrist ruin your relationship with STAB Rescue. Tommy has preferences. We have bills. And unlike Tommy, our donation accounts do NOT discriminate.”
Every dog carrying trauma deserves to have their boundaries respected. For Tommy, thriving means living in a standalone house with a secure, fenced yard, another friendly dog to show him the ropes, and an all-female household where he never has to feel on guard. With applications steadily arriving, his caretakers are taking their time to ensure his next adoption is truly forever—surrounded by all the warmth, patience, and plush couch blankets he has waited so long to claim.
