How to Tell if Your Dog Is Overweight and Help Them Slim Down Safely

Dr. Mary Cope says the ribs are the first thing to check when you want to know if a dog is carrying extra weight.

Extra body fat creeps up quietly, and it matters far more than just how snug a harness or collar sits. Excess weight raises a dog's risk of arthritis, diabetes, respiratory issues, and everyday mobility trouble. In an interview with Whole Dog Journal executive editor Kate O’Connor, companion animal nutritionist Dr. Mary Cope, PhD, broke down practical ways to spot excess weight early and take it off safely.

The rib check and the hand test

You should be able to feel your dog's ribs under a light covering of fat, spot an inward waist from above, and see an upward tuck behind the ribcage from the side. A dog can still display an apparent waist or tuck while carrying too much fat, which is why Dr. Cope emphasizes feeling the ribcage first. Sighthounds are the notable exception and rely on their own body condition charts.

Dr. Cope also suggests thinking of extra weight as a percentage of overall body mass rather than raw pounds. While a single extra pound might seem negligible on a Great Dane, it represents a substantial shift for a Chihuahua. In the video demonstration, Dr. Cope shares a quick hand test to help owners benchmark the feel of healthy ribs against their own knuckles and fingers.

Why feeding guidelines on the bag run high

When weight gain is caught early, a slight trim to normal meal portions can do the trick. Dr. Cope adjusts her own dogs' rations downward during winter, when colder weather and icy sidewalks naturally cut into daily outdoor exercise. But for a dog with significant weight to shed, simply cutting regular food portions in half also cuts vital protein, vitamins, and minerals in half. In those situations, a dedicated weight-management formula reduces caloric density while keeping essential nutrition intact, allowing a dog to enjoy a normal volume of food without feeling starved.

Many pet owners follow the printed feeding guide on the back of the kibble bag to the letter, but Dr. Cope notes those recommendations are broad estimates that frequently run high. She advises using the bag's chart purely as an initial baseline before tuning amounts to what you actually see and feel on your dog. Look for a "complete and balanced" label, check the kilocalories per cup printed in the small-print calorie statement, and measure with a true 8-ounce measuring cup rather than an arbitrary mug pulled from a kitchen shelf.

Low-calorie swaps and steady weigh-ins

Treats should make up no more than 10 percent of daily calories, a limit that vanishes fast for smaller breeds living in compact spaces where training happens often. Dr. Cope's favorite workaround is holding back about a quarter of the dog's daily kibble allotment to distribute as training rewards and puzzle enrichment throughout the day. When reaching for fresh snacks, unsalted canned green beans, thin carrot slices, and tiny scraps of lean meat deliver crunch without the calorie bomb of dense daily dental chews.

Consistency requires getting the entire household on board, as sneaking table scraps under the kitchen table easily derails progress. Dr. Cope has navigated the process firsthand after adopting a 50-pound beagle whose healthy target was just 22 to 24 pounds. To track results, schedule a quick scale check every two to four weeks—most local veterinary clinics happily let neighborhood walkers drop into the lobby just to use the scale. If weight plateaus or ticks upward after four weeks, consult your vet to refine the plan. For more everyday pet wellness routines, explore Barked’s care and tips hubs for mixed breed companions.
