Rescuers Step Inside a Doncaster Home and Find 84 Spaniels Waiting on the Stairs

Every single step had a little face looking back.

When the rescue team stepped around the corner into the dim stairwell, they stopped in their tracks. Packed shoulder to shoulder on every single wooden step, roughly 33 spaniels were crowded together, barking and staring down into the hallway.

RSPCA inspector Kristy Ludlam looked up to find dogs on every tread, their dark eyes watching each officer's movement through the house. Behind a closed kitchen door, another 20 to 25 dogs paced nervously or huddled into tight corners, unsure of what the sudden arrival of visitors meant for them.

Officers had initially arrived at the Tickhill home near Doncaster alongside South Yorkshire Police after receiving a welfare report about a dog with an untreated injury. The sheer scale of what they uncovered inside was overwhelming. A family of three had found themselves in over their heads when unneutered pets began breeding unchecked during the pandemic, and the household had gradually deteriorated under inches of grime. Realizing the animals needed immediate medical attention, the family agreed to sign all 84 dogs and two cats over to the rescue team.

Carrying 84 gentle souls out to waiting cars

None of the dogs had ever worn a collar or walked on a leash before, leaving them bewildered by the concept of stepping through an open doorway. Rather than forcing them, rescue workers gently cradled each dog in their arms, ferrying them one by one out to transport vehicles bound for four separate veterinary clinics across northern England.

Many arrived with ear infections, skin troubles, and malnutrition, but the veterinary teams saw past the matted coats to their sweet, resilient natures. Following court proceedings at Barnsley Magistrates' Court that concluded with animal welfare convictions, RSPCA branches mobilized dedicated foster networks to help the English Springer Spaniels take their very first steps into the wider world.

From hiding in the garden to craving morning cuddles

For dogs who had known only a crowded indoor existence, the outside world felt dauntingly huge. One little spaniel named Sprite was so thoroughly shut down when she first arrived with her adoptive family that she would spend seven to eight hours every day tucked away in the farthest corner of the garden, watching the backdoor from a distance. With patience, soft voices, and unwavering kindness, her family showed her that humans could bring comfort rather than chaos.

It’s been a long, old haul with Sprite, but she’s worth it.

“Knowing her history, we can’t believe she loves and trusts us like she does,” Sprite’s adopter, Sue Kairies, shared in an RSPCA release reported by The Dodo. “In the last six months, she’s really started to enjoy getting attention from us, and now she craves it all the time.”

Today, all but one of the 84 spaniels have been welcomed into permanent homes, trading crowded staircases and anxious days for soft dog beds and woodland strolls. Their remarkable transformations prove that no matter how long a pup has lived in the dark, the gentle patience of dedicated adoption and patient rescue work can guide them safely into the light.
