How English Springer Spaniels Grow From Goofy Puppies Into Sturdy Adults

From awkward puppy legs to adult muscle, here is how these lively spaniels grow over their first two years.

A four-month-old Springer Spaniel charges across the kitchen, ears flying like sails, before misjudging the hallway runner and sliding directly into a wicker laundry basket.

He scrambles right back up with a wagging tail and a goofy look, entirely unfazed by limbs that seem two sizes too big for his body. Anyone who has lived with a young English Springer Spaniel knows that awkward stretch well — that sudden phase where paws shoot out, ears stretch, and balance takes a backseat to pure enthusiasm.

Watching a spaniel puppy grow into a capable sporting companion is half the fun of bringing one home, but keeping track of what is normal along the way saves a lot of guesswork. A growth breakdown shared by iHeartDogs highlights the key milestones for the breed, charting how these energetic pups transform from fuzzy bundles into sturdy adults.

The early months of gangly legs and puppy teeth

For the first six months, English Springer Spaniels grow at a dizzying clip. Tiny puppies double and triple their size in a matter of weeks, shooting upward before their coordination quite catches up. Between three and four months, their needle-sharp puppy teeth begin falling out to make room for adult dentition, a transition that usually wraps up around six to seven months.

Around six to eight months, that soft, downy puppy fuzz also begins shedding out in favor of a denser, weather-resistant adult coat with characteristic feathering along the legs and chest. Field-bred lines tend to stay a little lighter and leaner on their feet, while conformation bench lines carry heavier bone and more lavish coats, but both share the same boundless outdoor curiosity.

Filling out the frame and settling into adult life

By their first birthday, most Springers have achieved roughly 95 percent of their adult height. According to the American Kennel Club breed standard, adult males generally level off around 20 inches tall at the withers and weigh between 45 and 55 pounds, while females average around 19 inches and weigh between 35 and 44 pounds.

Reaching full height does not mean they are completely finished, though. Their growth plates typically fuse between 12 and 18 months, which is why veterinarians recommend holding off on strenuous, repetitive road running or high-impact agility jumps until the skeleton is fully set. Over that second year, their ribcage broadens, muscle tone deepens, and they gradually settle into their adult shape.

Mental maturity usually follows a similar arc. Many spaniel owners find that their rambunctious teenagers start easing into a more predictable household rhythm between 18 and 24 months, especially when daily routines mix sniffing games with outdoor strolls.
