Mom Feared Her High-Energy Vizsla Would Be Too Rough — Then Penny Met Baby Phoebe

After months of pre-baby anxiety, a high-energy Vizsla meets her newborn sister with complete tenderness.

Olivia Tennison held her breath as she cradled one-week-old Phoebe in the living room, waiting for her energetic dog to make the first move.

For months leading up to her daughter’s arrival, that first introduction had been Tennison’s single biggest source of anxiety. Her Hungarian Vizsla, Penny, had spent years as the undisputed center of the household—a bouncy, high-spirited shadow who threw herself into every family activity with boundless stamina. After a short stay at a boarding facility while Tennison gave birth, Penny bounced through the front door with her usual enthusiasm, leaving her mom wondering how long the spirited pup would take to grasp that this tiny newcomer required a delicate touch.

A high-energy companion learns a brand-new pace

Instead of barging forward, Penny came to an immediate halt the moment she saw the infant in Tennison's arms. The spirited hunting dog lowered her head, softly stepped across the floor, and extended her snout with incredible restraint. She gently licked the baby’s tiny curled fingers, sniffing Phoebe’s forehead before settling quietly beside her mother's feet.

“So much of my nerves leading up to Phoebe joining our family were based around how much time it would take Penny to adjust and be gentle with her,” Tennison shared when posting the heartwarming footage to @ojtennison . “Never been so happy to be proven wrong.”

As reported by DogTime, that gentle first meeting set the tone for their daily routine. Throughout the week, Penny transformed into an attentive, self-appointed supervisor. Whether baby Phoebe was resting in her car seat during a drive or napping on the sofa, Penny positioned herself close by, keeping watch with calm devotion.

From rambunctious shadow to quiet guardian

Vizslas are famously dubbed “Velcro dogs” for their intense desire to stay physically glued to their humans, but their sheer speed and athleticism can make expecting parents nervous about accidental bumps or chaotic greetings. Yet dogs frequently show an uncanny ability to read vocal shifts, scent changes, and human body language, intuitively downshifting their motor when they sense fragility.

Rather than competing for attention or pacing restlessly, Penny chose closeness on Phoebe's terms. In one quiet moment captured on camera, the newborn rested asleep inside a cushioned baby lounger while Penny curled alongside her on the corduroy couch, casually draping one long, copper paw across the crochet blanket. For a mother who had spent weeks bracing for high-energy chaos, the gentle gesture was the sweetest reassurance that her two babies were already family.
