How to Soothe Your Dachshund’s Upset Stomach, Diarrhea, and Gas at Home

Gentle home remedies, fasting steps, and gut-soothing additions to help your hound bounce back from digestive distress.

A sudden bout of diarrhea, gas, or vomiting can leave any dachshund feeling miserable and their human scrambling for answers. While persistent gastrointestinal trouble always warrants an immediate trip to the veterinarian, mild tummy upsets can often be safely soothed at home with a few gentle, time-tested steps. From strategic short fasts and bland meals to gut-supporting probiotics and pure pumpkin, here is how you can help reset your hound’s sensitive stomach.

Few things tug at a dog lover’s heartstrings quite like a miniature hound curled into an unhappy ball, gurgling audibly and looking up with doleful eyes. Dachshunds are famously spirited and curious, which also means their inquisitive noses occasionally lead them straight into forbidden kitchen scraps, rich treats, or random garden discoveries that disagree violently with their digestion.

When digestive trouble hits, jumping straight to heavy meals or random medications can often make matters worse. Understanding how a Dachshund's digestive system reacts—and giving their gastrointestinal tract time to rest—is the foundation of helping them bounce back.

Give the digestive tract time to reboot

When your dog's stomach is actively rebelling, the single most effective first step is often temporary fasting. Withholding food for 12 to 24 hours removes the burden of processing nutrients, giving inflamed intestinal walls a chance to flush out irritants and calm down.

Hydration remains vital during a fast, but access needs mindful supervision. A dog with an upset belly that frantically gulps down a full bowl of cold water will almost certainly trigger another round of vomiting. Offer small amounts of water frequently throughout the day—or provide an ice cube for them to lick slowly—so they stay hydrated without shocking their system.

Once the fasting window passes without further vomiting, ease their stomach back into work with an ultra-bland diet. Boiled, skinless, unseasoned white meat chicken shredded over plain boiled white rice works wonders. If your pup follows a grain-free diet, plain canned pumpkin puree or mashed overripe banana can take the place of rice. Offer just a couple of spoonfuls every two to three hours, gradually increasing meal size over the next 24 hours.

When your dog is keeping food down and producing firmer stools, transition slowly back to their regular kibble over several days. Mixing 75% bland food with 25% regular food for a couple of meals, then shifting to a 50/50 ratio, and finally 75% regular food ensures their gut flora adapts smoothly.

Replenish the microbiome with targeted prebiotics and probiotics

Diarrhea severely depletes the delicate balance of beneficial bacteria living inside your dog’s intestines. Without these microscopic allies, digestion becomes inefficient, leading to persistent loose stool, abdominal cramping, and the kind of room-clearing gas dachshunds are surprisingly capable of producing.

Probiotics supply billions of beneficial live cultures, while prebiotics act as the non-digestible dietary fibers that feed and sustain those good bacteria. Essential gut-friendly additions include:

  • 100% Pure Canned Pumpkin Puree: Packed with soluble fiber, pure pumpkin absorbs excess liquid in watery stools while lubricating sluggish bowels (be sure never to feed spiced pumpkin pie mix).
  • Slippery Elm Bark: Renowned for forming a gentle mucilage that coats and soothes irritated gastrointestinal linings.
  • Chia Seeds: Rich in gentle soluble fiber that expands and regulates bowel transit times.
  • Digestive Enzymes: Formulations containing amylase, protease, lipase, and cellulase help dogs who struggle to break down proteins and fats fully, stopping loose runs before they start.

Probiotics are also invaluable tools for long-term care. Administering a canine probiotic for several days prior to introducing a new food brand—and continuing throughout the transition—can completely prevent diet-switch diarrhea. Similarly, if your dachshund ever needs prescription antibiotics for an infection, adding probiotics helps replenish the healthy flora that antibiotics inevitably wipe out.

When to call the vet right away

While mild dietary indiscretion often resolves within twenty-four to forty-eight hours with these practical tips, never hesitate to seek veterinary care if symptoms turn severe. Because dachshunds are small dogs, dehydration can set in rapidly.

Contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice blood in vomit or stool, persistent vomiting that prevents keeping water down, extreme lethargy, pale gums, or obvious signs of abdominal distress like whining and hunching. Snapping a quick photo of your dog's stool or vomit on your phone can feel unpleasant, but it provides your vet with crucial diagnostic clues to get your pup back on their paws as quickly as possible.
