Dog Steps In as Devoted Foster Mom to Orphaned Kittens, Giving Them a Bedside Wash Every Morning

The bedroom door barely clicks open before Rey comes trotting through the doorway, her tail thumping in steady, excited rhythm against the hallway trim.

She makes a direct beeline for the bedside setup, lowering her snout into the blankets to check on the tiny bundles waiting for their morning routine.

A morning bedside wash for three tiny survivors

In a viral clip shared by her family on Instagram, the gentle dog wastes no time tending to her charges. Rey leans down over the mattress edge, showering a tiny kitten in meticulous, rhythmic kisses from head to tail. After making sure the first little one is thoroughly groomed, she nudges over to give the second baby a soft greeting before circling right back to ensure the first kitten’s morning bath is complete.

The tender interaction struck an immediate chord with animal lovers across social media, who marveled at how naturally she stepped into the maternal role:

Stepping in after heartbreak

While the video captures pure morning sweetness, the family’s journey to this moment was paved with quiet resilience. As reported by DogTime, the clip posted by @littlehouseofcrazies carries a deeply emotional backstory. Just weeks earlier, tragedy struck the foster home when a mother cat and six of her kittens succumbed to feline panleukopenia. Only three fragile kittens survived the devastating illness.

As the tiny survivors began regaining their strength, Rey took it upon herself to fill the empty space left behind, adopting the babies as her own. “Sadly we lost mom and 6 kittens a couple weeks ago to panleukopenia... and these 3 are the surviving kittens,” their caretaker shared. “They are thriving now and Rey is always so excited to say good morning to them!”

For Mixed Breed dogs with strong nurturing temperaments, caring for cross-species orphans is a testament to how deeply canine companionship can reach. Rather than viewing the tiny newcomers with uncertainty, Rey instinctively recognized their fragility, providing the warmth, social grooming, and steady presence that motherless kittens need to feel secure. In her eyes, there is no question about lineage—every morning begins the same way, with a proud surrogate mom making sure her little rescue family is clean, loved, and whole.
