Surrendered for Being ‘Too Much Work,’ Benny the German Shepherd Learns to Trust Again

He was never too much; he just needed someone to slow down.

Tucked tight into the corner of a concrete kennel run, Benny pressed his 68-pound frame flat against the wall and lowered his muzzle to his paws.

Every unfamiliar clatter echoed off the shelter corridor, making the young pup pull himself inward, as if shrinking down might bring back the living room he had known all his life. For 11 months, that home had been his entire universe. But when his family decided that raising a growing German Shepherd was “a lot of work for me,” they dropped him off at the Harbor Animal Care Center in San Pedro, California.

As shared in video footage by @shelterdogstails and reported by DogTime, the initial shock of abandonment left Benny curled motionless against the cold wall. Yet beneath that cautious exterior was a gentle adolescent dog simply trying to understand where his world had gone.

Taking treats gently in the shelter yard

Once outside the noisy kennel runs, Benny's gentle nature quickly surfaced. Volunteer Kathie Adli spent time working one-on-one with him in the facility's play area, watching the hesitant pup decompress as soon as his paws hit the grass.

“Benny out in the yard yesterday,” Adli shared after their session. “He loves treats and exploring.” She discovered that despite his nervous arrival, he was surprisingly easy to leash and guide back inside, taking tasty rewards with incredible gentleness directly from human fingers.

A dainty spirit ready for patient love

While Benny can still be skittish with direct frontal approaches or sudden reaching toward his face, he relaxes comfortably when companions approach slowly from the side, happily leaning into gentle scratches along his shoulders and back. Shelter advocates describe him as sweet, dog-friendly, and naturally low-to-medium energy, with a remarkably soft and “dainty” play style around other dogs.

For young dogs going through sudden shelter transitions, quiet consistency makes all the difference. Benny doesn’t ask for perfection—only a steady hand, a calm routine, and someone willing to show him that loyalty runs both ways on the road to adoption.
