Rescue American Bully Abandoned at Emergency Vet Looks at Mom with Pure Adoration 3 Years Later

Surrendered during a life-threatening illness, Toad was only supposed to be fostered for a single week — until he melted into his new mom’s lap and never left.

Surrendered to an emergency clinic with pneumonia and a bruised lung, a rescue American Bully named Toad was taken in for a one-week foster stay — only to turn into a permanent family member who spends every work day glued to his mom's lap.

Sometimes the dogs we never planned to bring home become the ones we cannot imagine living without. For Nikki, who chronicles her family’s life on Instagram under @gettinggziggywithit, life was already full of lively “Philly chaos” with bully breeds. But when a critically ill pup needed an emergency landing pad, plans shifted in an instant.

An agonizing emergency surrender

Before finding his way to Nikki, Toad experienced the most frightening start imaginable. Rushed to an emergency veterinary clinic in critical condition, doctors discovered the young pup was suffering from severe pneumonia alongside a bruised lung.

Facing astronomical hospital bills and intensive round-the-clock medical care they simply could not provide, his previous owners were forced into an agonizing dilemma. Rather than letting him suffer without treatment, they made the heartbreaking choice to surrender him to a rescue organization that had the resources to save his life.

Nikki has always viewed that difficult decision with profound gratitude rather than judgment. As she shared, their willingness to let him go gave him a second chance at survival — and ultimately paved the road to her doorstep.

A seven-day stay that lasted years

When the rescue asked Nikki if she could step in, the arrangement was supposed to be strictly temporary: just one week of foster care while another volunteer was away on vacation.

Yet as Toad began to heal, the low-pressure comfort of a real home transformed the fragile patient into a devoted shadow. The intended seven-day favor quickly dissolved into an undeniable bond. Three years later, Toad has never left her side.

Today, Toad spends his days in quiet contentment, resting his squishy face directly over Nikki's legs while she works on her laptop. In a video shared with their community, Toad gazes up into her eyes with pure serenity, blinking softly as he snuggles into the blankets.

The emotional clip resonated deeply with dog lovers, who flooded the post with warmth and empathy:

"Who could abandon that sweet face."
"People judge me for spoiling my rescue so much. She’s always going to get whatever she wants."
"He’s so perfect."
"Sweet angel face!"

The velvet couch potato of the bully world

Toad’s constant desire for skin-to-skin contact is a hallmark trait of the American Bully. While their muscular frames often carry an intimidating reputation, bully breeds are celebrated by foster homes and trainers as quintessential "velcro dogs." Whether weighing 40 pounds or 80, many insist on acting like oversized lap warmers, deriving deep security from physical proximity to their trusted handlers.

Toad's journey also highlights the vital role of medical rescue networks. When sudden illnesses strike, emergency veterinary bills can climb into thousands of dollars within hours. Ethical rescues and temporary foster families bridge the gap between financial tragedy and life-saving intervention, ensuring dogs like Toad get the medical stabilization they need to thrive.

For Nikki and Toad, what started as a brief vacation favor turned into a permanent masterclass in canine gratitude and adoption — proving that sometimes the best family additions are the ones that arrive completely unannounced.
