Measuring Moose: San Diego Golden Retriever Outgrows the Kitchen Doorway in the Blink of an Eye

Doorway height checks mark a Golden Retriever’s whirlwind first year from tiny pup to full-grown boy.

Rubin crouched on the kitchen floor with a pencil tucked between his teeth, trying to steady a wriggling cream-colored pup against the doorframe. Every time he lined up the flat edge to mark the wood, the puppy spun around to investigate his sneakers.

Setting that first baseline mark took patience, but once it was etched into the door jamb, a quiet family ritual took root. Amanda and Rubin had just welcomed their new Golden Retriever puppy, Moose, into their San Diego home. Like many new pet parents, they knew the fuzzy baby stage would pass in a flash, but watching that transformation unfold in real time proved to be a whirlwind.

A fixed doorway in a whirlwind year

To document his journey, the couple turned an ordinary hallway entrance into a living growth chart. In clip after clip, Rubin crouches down in the exact same spot beside Moose, holding a pencil level across the top of his head to notch his height into the trim.

In the earliest frames, Moose is small enough to scoop into a single arm, barely reaching Rubin's shin. But as the sequence plays forward, the visual jump between milestones becomes striking. Moose's paws broaden, his floppy puppy fluff gives way to a sleek golden coat, and his head steadily climbs past Rubin’s knee, then his hip.

By the final measurement, Moose stands tall and proud beside his dad, looking directly into the camera as a full-grown young adult. On-screen, Amanda and Rubin captured the universal sentiment of puppy parents everywhere with two simple words: “WE BLINKED.”

Growing up fast, but keeping the puppy heart

As reported by DogTime, the milestone video celebrating Moose’s first birthday struck an instant chord with dog lovers. Shared on his dedicated profile, @beachboymoose —where his bio describes his daily routine as “catching sunsets, stealing socks, & melting hearts”—the clip prompted an outpouring of nostalgic comments from owners who remembered their own dogs outgrowing their baby collars overnight.

Golden Retrievers undergo one of the most dramatic growth spurts in the canine world, often quadrupling their size within their first four months and nearing their adult skeletal frame by month ten. Because owners live alongside their pups every hour of the day, that rapid physical change often blends into the background—until a fixed visual anchor, like a kitchen doorframe, suddenly reveals just how far they have come.

Yet despite the dramatic physical change, Moose’s gentle, trusting demeanor remained identical from the first mark to the last. Throughout the video, his eyes stay locked on Rubin with quintessential retriever devotion, proving that no matter how quickly a heartwarming puppy outgrows his measuring spot, he never really outgrows being his family's baby.
