Golden Retriever Senses Danger in an Open Field and Shields Six Newborn Bunnies

He knew they needed someone to look out for them.

Otis froze mid-stride, leaned hard against his leash, and started pulling Jenna toward the tall grass of a quiet Connecticut field.

Jenna Laigle knew her six-year-old Golden Retriever was normally calm and steady on their walks, but that afternoon in Torrington, he refused to let her steer him home. Trusting his instincts, she let the gentle dog guide her across the open turf until he stopped abruptly and looked down.

Six tiny kits huddled in the open grass

There on the ground lay a litter of six newborn bunny rabbits, scattered, motionless, and completely exposed. With red-tailed hawks often circling overhead, the fragile kits were in immediate peril without shelter or cover, looking still enough that Jenna initially feared they had not survived.

Otis stepped forward with extraordinary tenderness. Instead of chasing or barking, the big retriever lowered his head and began nudging each kit, sensing life in the tiny bundles before his human even had time to process what they were seeing.

Paws wrapped tight to keep them warm

One by one, Otis used his soft mouth to gather the scattered babies, moving them carefully into a tight cluster right between his front paws. He curled his golden body protectively around the litter, offering his own warmth and giving them gentle licks until the shivering newborns stopped trembling and settled against his fur.

According to Jenna, Otis seemed to take deep pride in his impromptu babysitting, acting purely on paternal protectiveness to "make them feel safe." She shared that he has always been an emotional dog with a deeply empathetic soul, constantly tuned in to smaller creatures that look distressed or vulnerable.

Guiding the litter back to their nest

While Otis kept steady vigil over his tiny charges, Jenna combed the nearby grass until she uncovered the mother rabbit's hidden nest. Carefully lifting each kit from Otis’s paws, she placed all six babies back into the safety of their burrow, where their mother could return to nurse them.

The bond between a watchful dog and an observant owner made all the difference that afternoon. As originally reported by iHeartDogs, Golden Retrievers are celebrated for their famous gentle mouths and compassionate intuition, but seeing that instinct turn into a patient rescue mission is a truly heartwarming reminder of just how much empathy dogs carry in their hearts.
