Foster Puppy With Cerebellar Hypoplasia Stuns Caregiver by Walking Across the Room

Foster Puppy With Cerebellar Hypoplasia Stuns Caregiver by Walking Across the Room

Pudding wasn’t supposed to walk without her wheels, but she had other plans.

Sara Burdick heard the frantic, familiar scuffle of puppy paws against the floorboards, but when she turned around, Pudding wasn’t anywhere near her wheelchair.

Instead, the little black-and-white puppy was upright on her own four legs, weaving across the open floor like a tiny sailor in stormy seas. Burdick scrambled to grab her phone, barely catching her breath as Pudding marched across the entire room before gracefully tumbling onto the rug.

When Pudding first arrived in Burdick’s foster home through Kansas City’s Pawsitive Tails Dog Rescue, even standing upright seemed out of reach. The puppy was diagnosed at just four weeks old with cerebellar hypoplasia (CH), a neurological condition where the cerebellum fails to develop fully. Because the cerebellum coordinates balance, fine motor control, and spatial awareness, dogs with CH experience intentional tremors and an exaggerated, wobbly gait.

In Pudding’s case, early mobility was virtually zero. She could not balance, steady her paws, or take a single step without support. To give her a taste of freedom, the rescue fitted her with a custom front-and-rear wheelchair harness.

We got her wheels so she could experience some independence, but she apparently decided those wheels were just training wheels.

With her wheels strapped on, Pudding quickly blossomed into an adventurous, treat-motivated dynamo. She learned to steer through doorways, drink from a mounted dispenser, and dine at an elevated food bowl to keep her tremors manageable. When out of her cart, she played in padded pens lined with thick blankets to cushion any unexpected tumbles.

Yet beneath the routine of physical accommodations, Pudding was quietly building muscle and finding her own internal rhythm. While cerebellar hypoplasia is permanent, it is non-progressive—meaning nerve connections don't worsen over time, and puppies often learn compensatory strategies as their bodies mature. With dedicated physical therapy, carpet runners for traction, and constant encouragement, dogs with CH frequently surprise their caretakers by developing functional mobility nobody anticipated.

For Burdick, seeing the puppy navigate the room unassisted was a powerful reminder of how resilient special-needs fosters can be. Pudding is expected to grow into a medium-sized mixed breed companion around 45 to 60 pounds, and Pawsitive Tails Dog Rescue is searching for an adoptive home ready to champion her daily routine and celebrate every wobble.

Pudding still relies on her wheelchair for long excursions, but around the house, her determination to stand tall never wavers. As her foster mom shared in a heartwarming update for this rescue pup, she may stumble and take ten times longer to cross the floor, but every single step belongs entirely to her.
