Former Chicago Stray Enjoys His First Bath — Then Celebrates With His Stuffed Toy Besties

Two months off the streets, Braveheart marks his first warm bath surrounded by his favorite plushies.

The tub faucet was running, but Braveheart wasn’t paying attention to the water — his broad snout was firmly glued to a thick smear of peanut butter.

As the warm lather massaged through his dark coat, the eighty-pound rescue dog barely flinched. For a pup who had spent months dodging traffic and scavenging for survival on the streets of Chicago, a warm rinse wasn’t an ordeal to fear; it was a five-star spa treatment.

Known affectionately to his foster dad as Brave, the gentle giant was found wandering alone on 115th Street on Chicago’s South Side. After being brought into Chicago Animal Care & Control, he was transferred into foster care through local rescue channels, landing in the safe hands of animal advocate Scott Corbett. Corbett, who documents rescue journeys through @4evertails, quickly discovered that behind Brave’s massive head and imposing frame was an absolute softie craving affection and comfort.

Just two months after leaving the pavement behind, Brave reached a milestone that can sometimes be daunting for newly rescued street dogs: his very first bath in a real home.

To make sure the experience was filled with positive associations, Corbett used one of the oldest foster tricks in the book: a wall-mounted peanut butter lick distraction. With delicious snacks keeping his attention engaged, Brave stood calmly in the white porcelain tub, contentedly licking away while his foster dad gently washed away weeks of city dust.

The best part of bath day, however, began the second the towels came out.

Once thoroughly dried off, Brave didn’t stage the usual post-bath zoomies. Instead, he made a beeline for his prized possessions. Under his foster dad’s proud house motto — “Rule 1: You can never have enough stuffies” — Brave began carefully collecting every plush friend he owned. One by one, he gathered his yellow Minion toy, a spotted stuffed cow, and a plush piglet, gently stacking them onto his plush orthopedic dog bed so they could inspect his fresh, clean scent.

For dogs adjusting from life on the street to life as a cherished companion, stuffed toys often serve as crucial security blankets. Soft toys carry familiar, comforting scents that help newly adopted rescue pups self-soothe and establish a boundary of personal safety. Seeing an eighty-pound former stray tenderly coddle his plush entourage is a touching visual proof of how quickly love and security can restore a dog’s playful inner puppy.

After completing roll call with his toy squad, the sweet mixed breed pup climbed up onto the living room sofa, tucked his heavy head into the cushions beside Corbett, and promptly drifted off into a deep, well-earned post-spa nap. Safe, clean, and surrounded by his best friends, Brave’s street days are officially behind him.
